Five Reasons to Attend

Why you don't want to miss SHPE NILA 2013 (July 31-Aug 4)

So you are on the fence again.  You've been a SHPE member for a few years, your chapter is chugging along OK but it's difficult to decide if you should spend a half week (including your weekend) at SHPE's annual NILA event.  Registration closes June 14th, so get off the fence!

Here are some reasons I think you should attend:

5. This deal is absolutely outrageous!
$350 includes:
- 3 meals per day plus late night snacks (yes you’ll be so excited you’ll be up at late): Let’s call it a value of $75 per day
- Housing for every night at NILA (3 nights if you show up Thursday the 1st): Let’s call it a value of $100 per day
- Expert instruction from leaders within and outside of SHPE: I’m going to put a cost of $100 per day for access to this
- Flight: Average $400 per round trip ticket

Total: $1225 Value for only $350
4. Networking with Brightest, Most Motivated, Latino leaders in the country when and where they converge
SHPE is full of the most inspired and inspirational people, just like you.  NILA is where the best of the best come together when they have decided they are fully ready to move their leadership to the next level.  Imagine if you could have met Einstein right before he defined the matter/energyrelationship.  What if you could have met Nikola Tesla before he invented the AC induction motor?  NILA is where our future Teslas and Einsteins come together… you could meet one or maybe even discover you are one!

3. Everything you didn't know about being a leader
At NILA you get to interact with experienced leaders from industry, experienced leaders from SHPE and some that are both.  The training you receive is directly applicable to managing your career as well as improving or revitalizing your SHPE chapter.  NILA is a morning to night, multi-day leadership event that is designed to inspire the leader within you to achieve your greatest potential.

2. Best run SHPE event
I’ve not met a single person who attended NILA and wasn’t impressed with the logistical flow of the event.  Workshops are valuable and timely, hands on activities are applicable and thought-provoking, food is actually really good and always available when you’re hungry or thirsty.  The level of professionalism of every speaker is of the highest caliber.  Between morning motivational discussions from expert speakers to keynote addresses from corporate executives, this event is something you do not forget.

1. Arm yourself to completely transform your chapter and change more lives

If you weren’t excited before attending NILA, you will be bouncing off the walls when you leave.  It isn’t just the motivation, but the hard skills and tangible tools you learn at NILA that prepare you to take your chapter to the next level.  This is just the start.  You also get to work side by side with other chapter leaders who listen and share best practices that have allowed their community impact to be large and sustainable. 

So in summary, you need to attend NILA!  Not just because it would be silly not to, but because I'm telling you to attend!  In addition, you need to tell your fellow board members to at least get on the wait list.  If you are not yet a leader, and nobody from your chapter board is attending NILA, either tell them to go or just go yourself and then become a chapter leader yourself.
